Paul, I recently purchased the Ives, Dent, Kenton mule cart from you on ebay.
In looking back at a piece you sold in March of 2014 that was a Harris mule cart I find that they look very similar except for the driver. As I am trying to learn to recognize manufacturers, what factors would identify it as one more than another? Additionally, since my last note I have used Russ several times and have been very pleased. Thank you for all your help. Emmett

Hi Emmett, thanks for your nice note. I also like Wilkins Horse Drawn Toys. I have some early pieces and I will list them on my web site in the near future. Yes, if you check this thread you will see that I would recommend Russ Harrington for quality cast iron replacement figures. I do try hard to present each item to the best of my ability, and will continue to do that. Thanks again for your kind words, Paul

I have just begun to collect a few old toys and would like to add several Wilkins or other makes Doctor's carts with original figures to my collection. Will you be offering any in the near future? I have a couple already without figures. Are original or replacement figures available from any source?
I greatly appreciate the quality of your postings on Ebay . The pictures themselves are an education no matter what the item, and the descriptions of each item are extremely helpful and trustworthy. Your website has enabled me to develop a visual catalogue.
I have purchased just one item from you so far but hope to do more as I can in the future.

DAKOTApaul:Wilkins pumper arrived in great shape. thanks for the superb packing. To maintain cast iron use a small amount of mineral oil with cheesecloth and rub gently. Use in an inconspicuous area first to make sure no paint "rub off" occurs. Once every year or so is enough. Don't overdo. Less is better. thanks, Chuck

Hi Martin,

Yes, I do believe that cast iron prices are declining for the more common pieces. Some could be the result of the economy, but other factors are contributing. I do think there are less collectors, and therefore the one's that do collect are only interested in the high end rare pieces, keeping those prices firm. The more common have less desirability among the small group of collectors. It is a shame, as I believe these are wonderful pieces of American History, and a great toy collectibles. It is amazing to me the elaborate detail that some of these toys had, and the craftsmanship. that went into making them from a material like cast iron. I also believe that the in flow of Chinese Reproductions has also hurt the market, and many do not know the difference and are afraid to purchase.

I appreciate you kind words about the auctions and my web site. please feel free to contact me any time - and keep up the collecting.

I discovered you and your website on e-bay a few months ago. I think its great - your approach to selling, both on here and e-bay. On e-bay I also appreciate your low starting bids, then let the market determine the price, auction style. I have noticed that the prices for cast iron pieces has continued to drop in the last few months, but some high quality pieces are still going fairly high. In your opinion, is this a function of the economy or is there an overall trend in lower cast iron auto toy prices. I other words is cast iron automotive collecting dieing, as the big name collectors are passing too?
Keep up the good work.

Hi, Paul. First let me say I love your website. We have recently started attending a few local auctions and have actually purchased a cast iron toy (cheap), but I am unable to identify it due to the lack of markings and (I believe) it is actually a few a few different pieces to make up one toy. I believe the horse and harness are Hubley, however the driver(s) and wagon I am not sure of. Any suggestions on how to identify them? I have honestly searched the web and the items I see that are similar do not list a manufacturer. I really appreciate your time. Thanks in advance Lisa.

Hi, the best is a damp cloth and a lot of dusting! Unfortunately, no easy answer on that one. Paul
