Lionel Std. Gauge Blue Comet Set w/ 400E, 420 421 422 +

When you think of Lionel Standard Gauge Trains - this is the set that comes to mind. This is Set No. 396E the "Blue Comet". It consists of the famed 400E Steam Locomotive, with its 400W Tender. The set pulls (3) Lionel standard gauge passenger cars - the No. 420 Pullman "Faye", the No. 421 Pullman "Westphal", and the No. 422 Observation "Tempel". This is the harder to find "Nickel" version with the light blue colored 400E with nickel trim and painted blue boiler bands - passenger cars that match the engine. Condition notes: Overall, the engine looks very nice. Appears to be all original. However, the frame is not good, and should be replaced. It looks like it has been repaired in the back and back side, and you can see some overpaint. A real positive is that it has a nice boiler and boiler front. The tender looks very nice. I see that it has been rewired. Two of the stanchions are loose. When tested on a test track the engine ran in forward and reverse, however, I could only get some noises from the whistle tender. The passenger cars are the nickel versions with the nicked journals, and trim. Overall nice, but with some issues as pictured. Some are missing handrails, and a couple are missing steps. The 421 has broken couplers. All show quite a bit of scratches on the roofs and sides. The insides appear in good order. Two have a small dent on the roof. Overall, this set looks great, and would be a fantastic addition to any collection. Selling as pictured, so please ask any questions if something is not apparent. Buyer pays shipping.
