Rare Lionel Prewar Standard Gauge Coal Train 318E, (3) 516, 517Here is a rare set of Lionel Standard Gauge Trains cataloged in 1929 only. This is set No. 340E the "Coal Train". Features the black Lionel 318E Electric Locomotive pulling three No. 516 red operating Coal Hoppers with coal loads and lines of data, and the hard to find No. 517 red Caboose with black roof. This set was pulled right from the attic and has not seen the light of day for many years. From looking at all the parts, and examining the trains closely, I believe that the train is all original. It looks like its goes together and has similar wear through-out. I cleaned them up a bit, but they could improve with further cleaning. The engine is a nice one. And, it ran in forward and reverse when tested. The lights work. It has a small ding on the roof. Roof is also dirty and could be cleaned. I took a lot of close-up pictures of the engine and its insides so you can see all. The tabs underneath do not look touched. The wheels have the black spokes, so I am wondering if they have been replaced or not. The Coal Hoopers show some wear as pictured. One is missing the top of the break wheel. Another is missing a piece to the coupler. Some oxidation on the couplers and wheels. But all together these are pretty nice for their age. The Caboose is also original. The black roof has wear, but I am glad no one repainted it. The red is the correct darker red color and the cupola roof has the black ends. The coupler on this car appears to be a replacement.
